Choose the split method that matches the result
“Split PDF” can describe several different jobs. Start by deciding what the finished files should look like. If every page must stand alone, use Every page. If you only need a few pages together, use Selected pages. If the document contains chapters or sections, use Page ranges.
This distinction matters because it determines whether you receive one PDF, several PDFs, or a ZIP containing many PDFs. Choosing the result first avoids having to merge files again later.
Split the PDF in your browser
- Open Split PDF.Choose one PDF or drag it into the workspace.
- Pick a mode.Use Every page, Selected pages, or Page ranges.
- Check the preview.Confirm the selected pages and expected number of outputs.
- Select Split PDF.Processing happens locally on your device.
- Download the result.A single result downloads as a PDF; multiple results arrive in one ZIP.
Keep the tab open while the document is being processed. Large PDFs can use significant memory, especially on phones or older laptops.
Page-range examples that work
Use commas between separate pages or ranges. The range 1-3,5,8-10 means pages 1 through 3, page 5, and pages 8 through 10. In Selected pages mode, those pages become one PDF. In Page ranges mode, they become three separate PDFs.
You can also control the order in Selected pages mode. Entering 3,1-2 places page 3 first, followed by pages 1 and 2. Repeated pages are included once, at their first position.
What happens to privacy and quality
Dismerge PDF does not upload the document. PDF.js reads the pages for previews and pdf-lib copies the chosen pages into new files inside a browser worker. Ads or consent tools can make unrelated network requests, but the PDF bytes are not sent to Dismerge PDF.
Splitting does not intentionally recompress images or turn pages into screenshots. Page dimensions, rotation, and visual content are retained. Document-level features such as top-level bookmarks, embedded files, and digital signatures may not survive because the result is a new document.
Troubleshooting a PDF that will not split
Password-protected PDFs are not supported in the MVP. Unlock the document in a trusted local application and try the unlocked copy. A corrupt PDF may open in a tolerant viewer but still fail when pages are copied; saving a fresh copy from that viewer can sometimes rebuild its internal structure.
For very large files, close memory-heavy tabs and try a desktop browser. The tool accepts files up to 200 MB and 2,000 pages, while the Every page mode is limited to 500 outputs.
