How to convert a PDF to Google Docs

The converter reads the text on each page, joins lines back into paragraphs, and marks larger text as headings. You get a Word (.docx) file, which Google Docs opens as a normal editable document.

How do I open the converted file in Google Docs?
Upload the downloaded .docx to Google Drive, right-click it, and choose Open with → Google Docs. If Drive is set to convert uploads to Google Docs format, it becomes a Google Doc as soon as it uploads.
Why a .docx file instead of a Google Doc?
A Google Doc can only be created on Google’s servers, which would mean sending your PDF to them. A .docx is built entirely in your browser, and Google Docs opens it as a normal editable document.
Will the layout look exactly like the PDF?
Not exactly. Text, headings, emphasis, and images carry over, but multi-column pages, tables, and text boxes become simple flowing paragraphs. Tables become rows of text, with wide gaps kept as tabs.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Only PDFs with selectable text become editable text. A scanned page is added as an image. For those, upload the original PDF to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, which runs its own text recognition.
What are the file limits?
One PDF of up to 200 MB and 500 pages. Split larger documents first and convert each part.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. This tool has no file-upload endpoint. Your browser reads the PDF and writes the .docx on your own device.
