Choose Preview or a browser splitter
Preview is already installed with macOS and works well when you need to pull out a few visible pages. A browser splitter is faster when you need every page, several exact ranges, or consistent filenames. Both approaches can keep the workflow on your Mac.
Use a duplicate of an important document when working in Preview so accidental edits to the open file are easy to undo.
Extract pages with Apple Preview
- Open the PDF in Preview.Choose View → Thumbnails if the sidebar is hidden.
- Select pages.Hold Command for separate pages or Shift for a continuous group.
- Drag the selection to Finder.Preview creates a new PDF from those pages.
- Rename the result.Open it once to confirm the page order.
Dragging is convenient but becomes tedious for many groups. Preview also makes “every page as a separate PDF” a repetitive manual job.
Split faster in your browser
Open Dismerge PDF in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Choose the source, select the result mode, and download the new PDF or ZIP. The file is processed locally, so the browser does not send the PDF to Dismerge PDF.
For selected pages, click thumbnails or enter a range. For chapters, use Page ranges. For scans that contain one item per page, use Every page.
Mac troubleshooting tips
If Safari reloads the tab on a very large document, close other tabs or try a desktop browser with more available memory. If Preview refuses to save, check that the destination folder is writable and that the source is not locked in Finder.
Password-protected documents must be unlocked first. Digital signatures will normally become invalid when pages are extracted because the signed document has changed.
